SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — In a heartbreaking incident that has rocked the local community, Shamar Elkins, a 31-year-old man, killed eight children, including seven of his own, and shot two women in a neighborhood shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana. This tragic event marks the deadliest shooting in the country in over two years, according to authorities.

City officials expressed disbelief and sorrow during a news conference held outside the residence where the shooting took place early Sunday morning. This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had, remarked Tom Arceneaux, the mayor of Shreveport.

Community members gathered to mourn, laying flowers and lighting candles outside the home. Attendees of an evening prayer vigil shared their heartbreak. Kimberlin Jackson, who participated in the vigil, noted that it is a moment to cherish loved ones: It just makes you take your children and hug them and hold them and tell them how much you love them.

The Violence Unfolds

The violence began shortly before sunrise when Elkins allegedly shot a woman at a separate location before driving to a second residence. There, seven children were killed, and another was found deceased on the roof, presumably attempting to escape. A child who jumped off the roof is reportedly recovering in the hospital.

State Representative Tammy Phelps expressed her anguish, stating, I can’t even imagine what the police officers and first responders actually dealt with when they got here today. The age range of the deceased children was between 3 to 11 years old.

The Aftermath of the Shooting

Following the fatal rampage, Elkins was pursued by police and ultimately died as officers discharged their weapons at him. Authorities have categorized this incident as a domestic situation, although it remains unclear what specifically precipitated the violence. Elkins had a prior arrest in 2019 related to firearms, but no significant reported history of domestic violence.

Reports indicate that Elkins and his wife were separating and had a court hearing scheduled for Monday, with disputes about the separation being cited as a potential catalyst for the tragic events. Witnesses noted that he had children from both his estranged wife and another woman who lived nearby.

This incident represents the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since earlier in 2024, where another mass shooting resulted in eight fatalities in a suburb near Chicago.

As investigators continue to piece together the aftermath of this tragedy, it emphasizes the urgent need for discussions surrounding domestic violence and gun safety in America.
