Earlier this year, an $8 million lab was seized north‑west of Johannesburg in May, and a $27 million laboratory was uncovered in September on an eastern farm. In July 2024 a third limnophi nursery lab “worth $108 million” was uncovered on another remote property.
The South African Police Service described the operation as “high‑profile and sophisticated” and warned that the facility was “industrial‑scale” with the potential to produce a large volume of street‑level meth.
In Africa, illicit production facilities are increasingly being used as a manufacturing base rather than merely a transit point. According to the UN, the continent’s porous borders facilitate drug movement from Latin America to Europe.
In Nigeria, authorities dismantled a highly sophisticated multi‑million dollar robbery‐linked meth laboratory in a wooded area last year. The U.S. Africa Command (Africom) noted that since 2023, 14 Mexican‑operated laboratories had been raided across the continent.
The five suspects from the Musina farm are expected to appear in court on Monday charged with drug manufacturing and possession. The raid underscores growing international cooperation, as Mexican cartels expand their production base into Africa.
