Vice President JD Vance advocated for a substantial reduction in legal immigration numbers during a recent event at the University of Mississippi, organized by Turning Point USA. He expressed that the current levels of immigration pose a threat to the social fabric of the nation.
Vance stated, “We have to get the overall numbers way, way down,” indicating that the ideal number of immigrants being admitted should be much lower than the current acceptance rates. However, he refrained from providing a specific figure when challenged by an audience member.
Highlighting the need for societal cohesion, Vance argued that in order for newcomers to successfully assimilate into American culture, there must be a stronger sense of a common identity established within society. “Until you do that, you’ve got to be careful about any additional immigration,” he insisted.
Moreover, he criticized former President Biden's immigration policies, which he claimed have facilitated an influx of immigrants detrimental to societal unity.
In the same session, Vance also spoke against engaging in unnecessary foreign conflicts, praising former President Trump's Middle East diplomacy initiatives and military strategies. He emphasized the importance of preventing American casualties in these contexts, despite rising military actions in locations like Venezuela.
When asked about the implications of using executive power to target political adversaries, Vance addressed concerns regarding Trump’s actions, suggesting that conservatives should not fear such moves, as the left would likely pursue similar strategies.
Vance's appearance was made more poignant with the involvement of Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, the organization's late founder. Kirk called for young conservatives to stand firm in their beliefs, drawing on personal loss to urge action in maintaining their values on campus.
