A wildfire dubbed the Bruer [sic] has expanded from the Bald Range into the Summerland and Okanagan‑Similkameen districts, covering over 36 square miles. Residents of 12,000 in Summerland and 8,000 in Peachland were ordered to evacuate, with power shut and many homes lost. Emergency officials label it one of the swiftest and most destructive fires in recent memory, and the blaze remains uncontrolled as of Saturday morning. The government issued evacuation orders for the entire population of Summerland (about 12,000 people) and 8,000 residents of Peachland. Emergency services struggled to protect structures and evacuate livestock and horses; many owners left gates open to let the animals find their way out.
