In brief
As Hurricane Humberto approaches Bermuda with maximum winds of 100 mph, Hurricane Imelda follows closely behind with warnings of significant rainfall expected. Bermuda's Minister of National Security has urged the public to prepare for severe weather conditions. Meanwhile, these storms have already caused fatalities in Cuba, with two reported deaths due to flooding.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The outer bands of Hurricane Humberto lashed Bermuda on Tuesday as it approached the territory, with Hurricane Imelda following closely behind.
A hurricane watch was in effect for the island in the north Atlantic. Forecasters warned of dangerous seas, strong winds, and heavy rains due to both storms.
The Category 2 Hurricane Humberto was approximately 275 miles west of Bermuda, with sustained winds of 100 mph. It was moving north-northwest at 17 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
While Humberto is expected to pass well west and north of Bermuda on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, Imelda is forecasted to approach or pass over Bermuda on Wednesday afternoon as a Category 2 hurricane.
Located around 180 miles north of Great Abaco Island, Hurricane Imelda had sustained winds of 75 mph and was moving northeast at 7 mph.
Bermuda's Minister of National Security, Michael Weeks, referred to the situation as a serious week of weather, urging residents to prepare adequately.
Despite the potential danger, Bermuda is known for its strong infrastructure capable of withstanding major storms.
Humberto is anticipated to bring up to 2 inches of rain to Bermuda, while Imelda could drop as much as 4 inches.
As these storms evolve, Imelda is also impacting southeastern North Carolina, where rain may lead to flash and urban flooding. Earlier developments saw Hurricane Imelda causing significant damage in eastern Cuba, where two fatalities were reported.
Prime Minister Manuel Marrero announced that the casualties in Cuba occurred due to landslides, affecting over 24,000 residents in the region and displacing 18,000 others.
