At MIP Africa 2026, the China Pavilion took center stage in Cape Town on Wednesday, showcasing a diverse slate of more than 50 Chinese audiovisual titles spanning dramas, documentaries, variety shows and animation, as well as the latest industry technology.
Wang Xiao, acting consul general of China in Cape Town, told Xinhua that Chinese productions have increasingly reached African audiences, especially younger viewers, as cultural exchanges flourish.
Wang Xiao said:
Excellent audiovisual works serve as both a window and a bond, fostering mutual understanding and affinity between the peoples of China and Africa. They enable African friends to know more about China, while helping Chinese audiences gain a better understanding of Africa.
Carol Weaving, managing director of RX Africa, the event organizer, highlighted how Chinese content brings storytelling wealth, production expertise and innovation to the African market. Weaving added, “The opportunity lies in identifying stories that connect with African audiences, making them accessible through appropriate language, localisation and distribution, and building a deeper understanding of what viewers across our continent want.”
Martin Hiller, portfolio director of FAME Week Africa, noted that the pavilion offers not only content for local markets but also expertise that could benefit African industry players. Hiller forecasted wider availability of Chinese titles on African streaming platforms, describing the exchange as a chance for both sides to share knowledge and content.
