In brief
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is pushing for the mass production of drones, taking cues from the Russia-Ukraine war. Analysts highlight that these low-cost weapons play a crucial role in modern warfare, assisting North Korea in addressing its military deficiencies amid economic sanctions.
North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, observed military drone tests this week, during which attack drones targeted vehicles, igniting significant fires. Following these demonstrations, state media reported on Friday that he has mandated the mass production of similar drones, marking a strategic shift towards enhancing North Korea's military capabilities.Facing limitations due to aging conventional weaponry, Kim has expanded North Korea's arsenal with advanced technologies, including ballistic and hypersonic missiles, alongside underwater drones. Analysts believe one essential lesson Kim has derived from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where North Korean troops are reportedly supporting Russia, is the increasing significance of drones in contemporary warfare.Given North Korea's persistent challenges with fuel and equipment shortages, low-cost drone technology offers a feasible solution. Recent military parades in the capital, Pyongyang, showcased various reconnaissance and attack drones that experts have noted share resemblances with Chinese and American models, although differing in technology and capability.During a visit to the Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex, Kim stated, “Military authorities worldwide will likely recognize that drones achieve clear successes in conflicts of varying scales.” He further underscored the necessity of drones, citing their expanding applicability in warfare, affordability, and simplified production processes, which could play a vital role in fortifying North Korea’s military presence in the region.
