As the seasons change, we find opportunities to declutter and reflect on what we cherish.

In brief

Spring cleaning not only clears space but invites a deeper connection with our past belongings and experiences.

Spring has arrived, bringing with it the annual ritual of cleaning out closets and re-evaluating belongings that have quietly gathered dust through colder months. The shift in weather serves as a reminder that it is time to assess the items occupying our homes, both physically and mentally. With the warming days ahead in the Northern Hemisphere, many are embracing the clearing of space to make room for fresh beginnings. As someone who recently undertook this spring-cleaning task, I’ve found satisfaction in decluttering, shedding items that no longer serve a purpose in my life. For instance, donating clothes I no longer wear has freed both closet space and mental energy, allowing me to reflect on my current needs without the distraction of old garments. The joy of letting go turns into clarity, as I no longer feel compelled to justify retaining items like that outdated jacket every time I reach for something else.Friends are experiencing similar journeys of rediscovery. My friend Minju, for example, stumbled upon a box of old photographs while decluttering her home. These nostalgia-inducing snapshots sparked a desire for connection with her past, which she previously intended to digitize or archive. Instead, Minju has chosen to display a selection of images in her living room. This decision prompts guests to engage in a tactile experience, flipping through cherished memories as an alternative to screen time. The act of spring cleaning transcends mere organization; it encourages us to examine the significance of our possessions and consider what we want to welcome into our lives. Beyond the clutter we discard, we are also reminded of the treasures we can incorporate into our daily living spaces—photographs, love letters, postcards, and various mementos that bear personal significance. Spring cleaning is about more than removal; it is an invitation to bring forth what we genuinely value and potentially re-honor those things we once set aside for future contemplation.
