Caught Between Fire: Palestinians Face Consequences of Israel-Iran Confrontation
As tensions flare between Israel and Iran, Palestinian communities in the West Bank suffer significant collateral damage, raising concerns over safety and governmental support.
When Iran launched a missile barrage at Israel on Friday, the fallout reached far beyond Israeli territory, severely impacting Palestinian communities in the West Bank. Alaa Jaradat, a 43-year-old Palestinian construction worker, and his family were among those affected, with shrapnel damaging their home and injuring his children. “We’ve had no help from the government, not even a warning,” Jaradat lamented.
According to Palestinian emergency services, around 80 pieces of shrapnel have struck Palestinian areas, causing injuries and widespread panic. In stark contrast to Israeli settlements that are equipped with bomb shelters and alert systems, Palestinian neighborhoods lack such resources, exposing them to dangers they have no means to mitigate. The absence of guidance or assistance from the Palestinian Authority (PA) further compounds this crisis. Nael Al-Azza, a spokesperson for the Palestinian emergency services, reported that seven individuals have sustained injuries from the fallout.
This dangerous situation is exacerbated by ongoing Israeli military activities in the West Bank, including military raids and settler violence, against a backdrop of entrenched movement restrictions imposed by Israeli checkpoints. Ahmed Jibreel from the Palestinian Red Crescent highlighted the obstacles faced by ambulances attempting to aid the injured, as they often must navigate extensive roadblocks, sometimes relying on foot to transport patients across checkpoints.
As fear grips the populace, gas stations have become focal points of anxiety, with residents stockpiling fuel amid uncertainty regarding potential shortages. Humor has become a coping mechanism, with locals quipping, “What’s the point of stockpiling fuel if you can’t move?” Such survival tactics underscore the daily struggles faced by Palestinians as they navigate the complex realities of conflict between larger powers, feeling caught in the crossfire without adequate means to ensure their safety.
