A grassroots initiative gains support from music stars and volunteers, transforming civic responsibility in Ghana.
In an inspiring movement gaining traction across Ghana, the Buz Stop Boys—a group of young professionals and tradespeople—are spearheading efforts to combat the rampant waste problem plaguing cities and towns. With approximately 12,700 tonnes of solid waste produced every day, only 10% is disposed of correctly. The clean-up initiative has garnered the support of both local celebrities and young people from overseas, showcasing a powerful sense of civic duty.
"Cleaning is about more than picking up trash; it's about changing mindsets," said Heneba Kwadwo Sarfo, the leader of Buz Stop Boys, while speaking to the BBC. Since its formation in July 2023, the group, initially consisting of just five members, has expanded to over 40 volunteers—ranging from midwives to military officers—who regularly participate in clean-up drives around Greater Accra.
Social media plays a vital role in their outreach, attracting further support through videos showcasing their efforts. Notably, some UK teenagers traveled to Accra to lend a helping hand, particularly in the area of Ablekuma, known for its overflowing waste issues. Sarfo sees this volunteerism as a call to action for locals. He stated, "If you don't get involved, you are failing our planet."
Support from the entertainment industry has also fueled the movement. Sister Derby and renowned dancehall artist Shatta Wale have publicly endorsed Buz Stop Boys. Wale emphasized, "These boys are the real heroes. They are doing what many of us find too challenging." During a live TikTok session, he helped raise 30,000 cedis (approximately $1,830), while former President John Mahama and Transport Minister Asensu Boakye contributed substantial amounts to support the group's activities.
The organization remains politically nonpartisan and focused solely on environmental cleanliness, countering the status quo where reliance on government has historically fallen short. Sarfo underscored the importance of citizen-led initiatives in addressing environmental challenges, asserting that individuals shoulder the brunt of the repercussions from environmental neglect.
Buz Stop Boys continue to establish themselves as change-makers in Ghana, emphasizing that a cleaner Ghana is possible, one clean street at a time. As their movement grows, so does the collective responsibility of all citizens to contribute to a sustainable future.
