Over the past 10 months, Russian losses in the war with Ukraine have been growing faster than any time since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, as indicated by recent BBC analysis.
As peace efforts intensified in 2025 under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, 40% more obituaries of soldiers were published in Russian sources compared with the previous year.
Overall, the BBC has confirmed the names of almost 160,000 people killed fighting on Russia's side in Ukraine.
Since February 2022, BBC News Russian has collaborated with independent outlet Mediazona and volunteers to track Russian war losses through a variety of sources, including official reports, newspapers, social media, and emerging memorials and graves.
Military experts suggest that the actual death toll could be much higher, estimating that the confirmed losses might represent only 45-65% of the true number. This translates to between 243,000 and 352,000 Russian deaths.
2025 began with fewer obituaries in January, but spikes were noted in February, coinciding with first discussions about ending the war between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Subsequent peaks were recorded in August during a diplomatic meeting, and again in October and November when the U.S. presented a comprehensive peace plan.
Notably, the Kremlin continues to view territorial gains as a bargaining chip in negotiations, despite escalating losses which include numerous 'volunteer' recruits—not traditional military personnel.
A troubling trend observed is that now one in three Russian military deaths are from such volunteers, escalated from 15% just a year prior, suggesting that an increasing number of soldiers entering combat have been compelled to sign contracts under various pressures.
This complex dynamic reflects not only the ongoing tragedies of the war but also the shifting military strategy within Russia, where recruitment has been effectively offsetting lost personnel without resorting to a broad mandatory mobilization.
While NATO estimates total Russian military dead and wounded at over 1.1 million, Ukrainian battlefield losses remain severe, with President Volodymyr Zelensky stating battlefield deaths and injuries are alarmingly high.
