The ancient Drum Tower in Fengyang County, Anhui Province, experienced a dramatic roof collapse on Monday, leading to widespread concern but thankfully no reported injuries. The incident took place around 18:30 local time, as multiple tiles fell from the tower's roof, almost hitting bystanders. The Drum Tower, recognized as the largest in China, has been a symbol of historical significance since its construction in 1375 during the Ming Dynasty, although it underwent extensive renovations in 1995.

Local authorities swiftly responded to secure the area, moving people away from the scene, as an investigation was announced by the Fengyang County Culture and Tourism Bureau. The inquiry will focus on the design and construction of recent repair works, with experts being consulted to assist in the verification process. The tower, located approximately 200 miles from Beijing, has been closed to the public until repair works can restore its integrity, with a reopening date to be confirmed. The historic site is notable not just for its architecture but as the birthplace of the Ming Dynasty's founding emperor, Hongwu Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang.
