A suspect in the fatal shooting of prominent Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy has been arrested, the country's President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
The 54-year-old parliamentarian was killed by an attacker posing as a courier in the western city of Lviv on Saturday, sparking a manhunt.
Ukraine's interior minister Igor Klymenko announced early Monday that the suspect had been detained in the western Khmelnytskyi region.
Parubiy, who gained prominence during Ukraine's Euromaidan protests, was shot in the street, and sources indicate his movements may have been observed to facilitate the attack.
Klymenko further reported that the investigation revealed the assassination was carefully orchestrated, indicating extensive planning involved in tracking Parubiy's travel schedule.
Zelensky provided updates through social media, stating he had communicated with chief prosecutor Ruslan Kravchenko, who stated the suspect had offered initial testimony.
Urgent investigative actions are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of this murder, he said, highlighting the intense efforts by law enforcement agencies.
Footage from the scene purportedly depicts the shooter, who disguised himself as a worker of the delivery service Glovo, approaching Parubiy and firing multiple shots, as reported by police chief Oleksandr Shliakhovskyi.
Parubiy, who served as the speaker of Ukraine’s parliament from April 2016 to August 2019, played a significant role in organizing protests calling for stronger ties with the EU, ultimately contributing to the ousting of former President Viktor Yanukovych.
