Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is reported to be in stable condition after surgery for a brain bleed, following a fall in October.
Lula, 79, was admitted to hospital due to a brain bleed resulting from an October fall at the presidential residence. MRI scans confirmed the injury, leading to surgery at the Sírio-Libanês hospital in São Paulo. Doctors performed a craniotomy to relieve the pressure by removing a section of the skull. They assured the public that he experienced no brain injury or significant after-effects from the surgery.
In a Tuesday morning press briefing, medical staff described Lula as "lucid" and "interacting" with them. The expectation is that he could return to Brasília by next week if his recovery continues smoothly. The presidential spokesman noted that while Lula remains in stable condition, he would likely stay in intensive care for an additional 48 hours.
While the President recuperates, Vice-President Alckmin will take on several official responsibilities, including meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. Lula had canceled a planned trip to Russia due to medical advice following the bathroom fall that caused his injuries. He had undergone five stitches and had quickly resumed duties shortly after the incident. Lula, who took office on January 1, 2023, won a contentious election over former President Jair Bolsonaro, often claiming he possessed the vigor akin to a "30-year-old."
