Jair Bolsonaro Undergoes Procedure for Persistent Hiccups
Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has received a medical procedure to treat his chronic hiccups, according to his medical team. Saturday's treatment 'went well', as one of his doctors reported. The procedure, which was clarified to be a non-surgical treatment, lasted around an hour.
The controversial leader is currently serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Following a recent successful surgery for a double hernia, Bolsonaro's doctors found it necessary to address his severe hiccups, which his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, revealed had caused him distress for the past nine months.
On the day of the procedure, Bolsonaro endorsed his son Flávio to contest Brazil's 2026 presidential elections in a handwritten message read outside the hospital. While undergoing medical care, he continues to serve his sentence. Once discharged, he will return to a cell within the federal police headquarters.
His medical team confirmed they had treated one of his phrenic nerves, which are responsible for controlling the diaphragm's movement, and plan to address the other nerve shortly. This intervention is seen as a hopeful step toward alleviating the involuntary spasming that has significantly affected Bolsonaro's daily life.
The political implications and personal challenges faced by Bolsonaro amid his health issues and legal troubles continue to draw public attention in Brazil.”
