Search Operations Intensify for Missing American Hiker in Spanish Pyrenees
Cole Henderson, a 27-year-old American, has been missing since July 9 after embarking on a solo hiking expedition in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park in Spain.
Rescue teams in Spain are actively pursuing search efforts for an American hiker, Cole Henderson, 27, who has not been seen since embarking on a hike on July 9. According to information shared by friends and family, Henderson was last in contact around 2.pm, indicating he was preparing to hike near Mount Perdido within the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, located in the region of Huesca.
Henderson texted friends that he would be putting his phone in airplane mode before starting his hike. His departure was marked by his parking a vehicle in Torla, a village known to be a common starting point for hiking excursions in the area. “We believe he entered the park from the Torla side, but we are unsure of his exact hiking route,” stated Max Senoff, a close friend, via social media.
A resident of Amsterdam where he had been living and working, Henderson's hiking adventure followed a trip to Pamplona for the Running of the Bulls festival. While the trek to Mount Perdido—one of the tallest peaks in the Pyrenees—can be done within a single day, it remains a strenuous climb, especially in the ascent towards the summit.
Concerns for Henderson's safety grew when he failed to board his flight back to the Netherlands the following week. A search operation was initiated by Spain's Guardia Civil on July 14, deploying helicopters and trained rescue teams to comb through the rugged terrain of the national park. Authorities noted that they located his vehicle parked in Torla, along with a camping fuel receipt, suggesting he may have planned to partake in extended outdoor activities.
Mount Perdido's picturesque yet formidable landscape, comprising steep canyons and lush meadows, poses significant challenges for hikers, heightening worries among Henderson's friends and loved ones. Known for his adventurous spirit and organizational abilities, Henderson actively participates in hiking, soccer, and running clubs, earning a reputation for fostering group outings and a love of the outdoors.
As the search continues with heightened urgency and collaboration among various rescue teams, Henderson's community remains hopeful for his safe return.
