PROVO, Utah (AP) — Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man now charged with the assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, reportedly admitted to being the shooter in text messages to his partner. These messages revealed his acknowledgment of the crime and discussions of hiding evidence after Kirk was shot while addressing a crowd of approximately 3,000 people on September 10.

Robinson allegedly sent a text urging his partner to search beneath his keyboard at home, where a note was found stating, 'I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.' Despite the shocking confession, his partner did not report this information to law enforcement, which has prompted investigators to explore potentially hierarchical assistance in the assassination.

Following the murder, Robinson evaded capture until his parents recognized him from images released by authorities. They later facilitated his surrender, which was described as peaceful. Robinson has since been charged with capital murder, among other offenses, and could face the death penalty.

As prosecutors build their case, they allege that Robinson used a bolt-action rifle belonging to his grandfather to fatally wound Kirk in the neck. DNA evidence found on the rifle reportedly matched Robinson’s, suggesting a strong link to the crime.

Kirk was known as a prominent figure in right-wing politics, particularly recognized for energizing youth support for the Republican Party. Investigators are currently examining Robinson’s possible motives, with some suggestive texts indicating he was driven by Kirk’s perceived hatred, particularly regarding anti-transgender views. Robinson’s family reported that he became politically radicalized over the past year, shifting towards more leftist ideals, which added complexity to his motivations for the assassination.

Authorities are delving into Robinson’s communications both before and after the shooting, including interactions in various online chatrooms, to uncover the wider implications of his actions amid escalating political tensions in the United States. The tragic event has led to broader discussions about political violence and the responsibilities surrounding societal discourse on divisive topics.
