Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has stated he is prepared to collaborate with world leaders on a peace initiative for Israel and the Palestinians, as announced by France on Monday.

During his video address at the UN General Assembly, Abbas reiterated his refusal to allow Hamas to maintain a governing role in Gaza while demanding its disarmament. He also urged nations that have yet to recognize a Palestinian state to do so and called for the UN to grant full membership.

He condemned Israel's military actions in Gaza, labeling them as some of the most significant humanitarian tragedies of recent decades but expressed his disapproval of Hamas’s attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken.

Since the outbreak of conflict, at least 65,502 Palestinians have reportedly died due to Israeli military operations, as stated by the Hamas-run health ministry.

Abbas was unable to attend the UN General Assembly in person because the US State Department revoked visas for him and other Palestinian officials, an action attributed to undermining peace efforts.

In his address, he thanked countries like Canada, Australia, the UK, and several European nations that recently recognized a Palestinian state, contrasting the US's stance that regards such recognition as a reward for Hamas.

Endorsing a peace plan outlined by French President Emmanuel Macron at a recent summit, which included Saudi Arabia, Abbas detailed steps including hostage release and cessation of military actions as part of a broader plan to establish a sovereign and demilitarized Palestinian state governed by a transitional administration.

Abbas expressed his willingness to work with President Donald Trump, Saudi Arabia, France, the UN, and other partners to implement this peace plan, aiming for both a just peace and regional cooperation.

The Palestinian leader further emphasized the need for a connected and independent Gaza and West Bank while stating that a Palestinian state should assume full control of Gaza following an Israeli withdrawal, with requisite support from the Arab and international communities.

Abbas also called for reforms within the Palestinian political structure, including elections to take place within a year after the war's conclusion, striving for a democratic and modern state committed to international law. The last Palestinian elections were conducted in 2006 and resulted in Hamas's rule over Gaza, following violent tensions with Abbas’s Fatah faction.
