Rescuers say at least 20 people have been injured in southern Israel after the Israeli military reported a drone was launched from Yemen.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the drone struck the resort town of Eilat on the Red Sea coast, with attempts made to intercept it.
The Magen David Adom emergency medical service confirmed that 20 individuals were taken to Yoseftal Hospital, including two men with serious limb injuries.
The Iranian-backed Houthis claimed responsibility for the drone strike, marking a bold act of aggression amidst ongoing conflict in the region.
A spokesman for the Houthis, Yahya Sarea, stated that two drones targeted two Israeli enemy targets in what they are calling a successful operation.
Israeli media reported live footage of the drone strike, displaying plumes of smoke rising from the impacted area. Social media posts showed a drone flying and then disappearing behind buildings shortly before the explosion.
The IDF announced the deployment of troops and police to Eilat following the report of the attack, with a helicopter engaged to evacuate the injured.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz provided well-wishes for those injured, commenting on the attack as indicative of the Houthis' ongoing aggression, equating their actions to those of other adversaries like Iran.
The strike is considered one of the most significant by the Houthis in terms of civilian casualties. Previous attacks include a drone strike in Tel Aviv, which resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries in July 2024.
Eilat, a tourist hotspot, has witnessed a string of drone assaults, including one on hotels in the area last week, which did not result in casualties. Earlier in September, a drone attack targeted Ramon Airport near Eilat, wounding one person.
The Houthi group has intensified its missile and drone operations against Israel, framing these actions as support for Palestinian causes amid the ongoing conflict with Hamas.
In retaliation, Israel has conducted airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, escalating tensions between the two parties. An Israeli strike earlier this month reportedly resulted in significant casualties in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
