The body of Israeli hostage Ilan Weiss has been recovered in an operation in the Gaza Strip, Israel's military has announced.

Weiss, 56, was killed during Hamas's attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The remains of a second hostage, whose identity has not been disclosed, were also found, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Following the attack, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages being taken, Israel launched a major offensive in Gaza. The latest statistics suggest that at least 62,966 Palestinians have died since the war commenced, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry.

Ilan Weiss was killed while defending Kibbutz Beeri during the assault. His family endured the trauma of his abduction, with Weiss's wife, Shiri, and daughter, Noga, included among those taken hostage before their eventual release during a temporary ceasefire in November 2023.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog commended Weiss for his valor, stating, Ilan showed courage and noble spirit when he fought the terrorists on that dark day, while expressing admiration for his family’s resilience throughout their ordeal.

Currently, 48 hostages are believed to still be in Gaza, with Israel maintaining that 20 of these individuals are alive. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces escalating public pressure to negotiate the release of all hostages, amidst widespread protests calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Despite the pressing humanitarian situation, Israel continues its military campaigns, particularly targeting Gaza City, aiming to defeat Hamas as part of its strategy for hostage release. This offensive has drawn severe criticism as the UN and Western nations have warned of potential humanitarian disasters due to operations in densely populated areas.

As the conflict continues, casualties mount on both sides, with fresh reports indicating that Israeli airstrikes killed numerous Palestinians, exacerbating the toll on an already strained civilian population.

Questions surrounding the ongoing violence remain, as civilians like three-year-old victims are caught in the crossfire, leading to calls for urgent resolutions to avoid further loss of life. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, with reports of malnutrition-related fatalities climbing as the conflict proceeds.
