DONETSK REGION, Ukraine — A Russian glide bomb struck the village of Yarova in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday morning, resulting in at least 24 dead and 19 injured, as residents gathered outdoors to collect their monthly pension payments. The Ukrainian Emergency Service reported the casualties promptly following the attack, highlighting the tragic nature of the incident, particularly as most victims were elderly, including many pensioners.
The bomb struck around 11 a.m., sending shockwaves throughout the village located close to the front lines. Vadym Filashkin, the head of the Donetsk regional administration, confirmed that 23 of the deceased were pensioners.
In a reaction to the escalating violence in Ukraine, Poland's armed forces were placed on a heightened alert overnight, prompting a statement from the Operational Command of Poland's Armed Forces. They indicated this precautionary measure aimed to secure Polish airspace and protect the nation from potential spillover effects of the conflict. With air and ground-based defenses at their highest readiness, Poland signaled a robust military response to ongoing Russian strikes.
Among the wreckage, Yarova resident Hennadii Trush mourned the loss of his wife, who perished in the blast while collecting her bedridden mother-in-law's pension. He described the attack as “beyond words,” revealing the shocking reality for residents who had thought previous strikes were limited to outskirts.
The aerial assault has intensified fears regarding the safety of civilians in Ukraine amidst an uptick in Russian attacks. The United Nations estimates that over 12,000 civilians have died in the ongoing conflict, which has now persisted for three years.
