BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s Supreme Court has ruled that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is required to serve a one-year prison term following previous convictions related to graft and abuse of power.

This ruling follows a court investigation into whether authorities mishandled Thaksin's return to Thailand to serve his sentences. Thaksin had spent over a decade in self-exile before returning in 2023, where, after less than a day in jail, he was transferred to a suite at Bangkok’s Police General Hospital for alleged medical reasons.

Initially sentenced to eight years for three separate convictions, Thaksin’s term was commuted to one year by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. After serving just six months in the hospital, he was released on parole, raising concerns about the fairness of his treatment. Many members of the public and various observers have expressed suspicion regarding Thaksin's health claims, suggesting he may have received special privileges due to his political status.
