Zelensky Calls for Enhanced Sanctions Following Deadly Kyiv Strikes
The Ukrainian president urges stronger international sanctions against Russia after a drone and missile attack in Kyiv results in the deaths of 31 people, including children.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for heightened international sanctions against Russia in response to a devastating attack on Kyiv that resulted in the deaths of at least 31 individuals, including five children. The assault, which occurred on Thursday, also left 159 people injured and caused significant damage to residential buildings and various public infrastructures, including a hospital, school, nursery, and university.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of sanctions, stating, "No matter how much the Kremlin denies their effectiveness, sanctions do work – and they must be strengthened." The Ukrainian capital observed a day of mourning following the tragedy, which is considered one of the deadliest attacks since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The Ukrainian air force reported that over 300 drones accompanied by eight cruise missiles were used in the assault.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the actions of Russia and suggested that new sanctions could be on the horizon. He described Russia's behavior as "disgusting" and stressed the need for a ceasefire. Trump's comments come alongside pressures for negotiations aimed at establishing peace between Russia and Ukraine, articulated by John Kelley, the acting U.S. representative to the United Nations.
Kelley urged both nations to negotiate a ceasefire, stating, "It is time to make a deal." Moreover, Ukraine has reportedly received indications from the U.S. regarding potential sanctions targeting Russian oil and other secondary markets. Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed the urgency for maximum pressure on Russia, noting that Trump's approach has been both "generous and patient."
In response to the bombing campaign, Germany has pledged to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities by providing two additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems. President Zelensky has highlighted the scale of Russian aggression, sharing statistics from July that indicated over 5,100 glide bombs, 3,800 Shahed drones, and 260 missiles—including 128 ballistic missiles—were launched into Ukraine. "Every day matters," he asserted, calling for a united front from America, Europe, and other global community actors to halt the violence.
