**Families Face Devastation as They Return to Tyre Post-Ceasefire**

In southern Lebanon, residents return to severely damaged homes after a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

Exploring the aftermath of destruction in Tyre reveals emotional reunions amid damaged lives and ongoing challenges of recovery.

Families are slowly making their way back to Tyre in southern Lebanon, facing an overwhelming scene of destruction left in the wake of an Israeli airstrike. The Marouf family, like many others, stood helplessly amidst a landscape of twisted metal and collapsed buildings, their memories tainted by the reality of loss and displacement. The ceasefire established between Israel and Hezbollah had prompted their return, but the home they once knew no longer existed — a fact underscored by partial building collapses and obliterated interiors.

Mohamad Marouf, the family's patriarch, recounted his sorrow as he climbed the stairs to their sixth-floor apartment, reliant on smartphone flashlights due to the absence of electricity. Upon entering, he confronted the grim reality: their home had been ravaged, with each room littered with debris and shattered belongings. The attack that damaged their building had originated from a strike on a nearby residential complex, showcasing the indiscriminate nature of the conflict. The emotional weight bore down on him as he mused on the unknown road ahead, living temporarily with relatives.

As displaced families flocked back to Tyre, Hezbollah supporters celebrated what they perceived as a victory over Israel, as symbols of their group accompanied many homecomings. A banner proclaiming "Made in USA" hung where Hezbollah asserted its presence, indicating tensions over the sources of military power. Despite the festive atmosphere among some, others reflected on the deeper scars left by the near-total destruction throughout the region and challenged the narrative of triumph.

The conflict ignited in October, catalyzed by Hezbollah’s support for Palestinians during escalating tensions, leading to extensive Israeli military operations. The ongoing struggles have resulted in significant losses on both sides, with estimates indicating nearly 4,000 Lebanese casualties amid the turmoil and destruction.

The cessation of hostilities provides a temporary reprieve, with hopes that it might pave the way for stability. As part of the ongoing discussions, military withdrawals are slated to occur, with Lebanese forces strengthening their presence in southern areas. However, the outlook for recovery remains bleak, muddled by questions about financial resources and reconstruction plans.

Leadership from Hezbollah took steps to showcase their control and relevance in the aftermath, with tours of damage sites drawing attention to the impact of the conflict. Local business owners, like Deed Badawi, expressed determination to rebuild, hopeful for restoration despite profound losses within the community. The spirit of resilience prevails, yet the uncertainty of recovery looms large for many families—especially the Maroufs—who face an uphill battle in reclaiming their lives amidst the remnants of war.
