Investigation Launched into Domestic Abuse Report Following Harshita Brella's Tragic Death
Police and independent watchdogs are scrutinizing the handling of domestic violence allegations linked to Harshita Brella's case after her body was found in London.
Harshita Brella's tragic death has prompted a comprehensive investigation into how her domestic abuse allegations were handled by the Northamptonshire Police. The 24-year-old was found deceased in the boot of a car in Ilford on November 14, four days after she was reportedly killed while visiting Corby, Northamptonshire.
Prior to her death, Brella had filed a report of domestic abuse against her husband, Pankaj Lamba, who was arrested by police in September. After being released on bail with conditions and a domestic violence protection notice, Mr. Lamba, 23, became the prime suspect in the case and is currently the target of an international manhunt.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened an investigation into this incident, focusing on the police's response to Brella's abuse report made in August. IOPC's regional director, Derrick Campbell, indicated that they would review the police's subsequent interactions with Brella to assess whether their actions were appropriate and adequate.
The Police have also released a CCTV image of Brella and Lamba from November 10, showing them near a boating lake in Corby, as they implore anyone with additional information from that evening to come forward.
As the investigation proceeds, Campbell emphasized the importance of reaching out to Brella’s family to convey condolences and clarify the IOPC's role in examining the circumstances surrounding her case, revealing the heightened scrutiny and potential accountability for law enforcement in domestic violence situations.
With ongoing demands for justice from those close to Brella, the community and family members are left grappling with the heartbreaking reality of her untimely demise and the systemic issues surrounding domestic violence interventions.
