"Cinematography Tribute Amidst Controversy: 'Rust' Premieres at Camerimage Festival"

The premiere of 'Rust' highlights both the legacy of Halyna Hutchins and ongoing controversies surrounding the film's production.

Amidst tension and differing opinions, the western film 'Rust' premiered at the Camerimage Festival in Poland, three years after the tragic shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. While the screening aimed to honor Hutchins’ memory, it sparked criticism from notable industry figures regarding appropriateness and profit motives.

The western film 'Rust' made its low-key premiere in Torun, central Poland, at the Camerimage International Film Festival, marking three years since the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set in New Mexico. The festival's organizers indicated the screening would serve as a tribute to Hutchins, a respected Ukrainian-born cinematographer who had previously attended the festival.

Notably absent from the event was Alec Baldwin, the film's star, who faced backlash from certain Hollywood figures for his involvement in the project. Writer and director Joel Souza, who was also wounded in the incident, expressed mixed emotions regarding returning to the set, revealing that Hutchins' husband, Matt, played a crucial role in his decision to finish the film. “At first I didn't really know if I wanted to do this, but as I found out that this is what Matt wanted, it began to change my mind,” said Souza, asserting that the film is dedicated to Hutchins.

However, the decision to premiere 'Rust' at Camerimage has faced criticism from some within the cinematography community, with claims that it disrespects Hutchins' memory. Hutchins' mother, Olga Solovey, who is pursuing legal action against the production and Baldwin, did not attend the premiere, expressing through her attorney that the event appeared to profit from her daughter's tragic death.

On October 21, 2021, during rehearsals for a scene, Baldwin accidentally fired a live round from a gun meant to contain dummy rounds, resulting in Hutchins' death and Souza's injury. The circumstances of how a live bullet entered the weapon remain unclear. In a judicial development earlier this year, an involuntary manslaughter case against Baldwin was dismissed, although the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence.

Set in 1882 Wyoming, 'Rust' tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who, after unintentionally killing a rancher, goes on the run with his grandfather, portrayed by Baldwin. Souza emphasized that while many in the industry remain uncomfortable with the film's completion, there are differing perspectives on the matter. Cinematographer Bianca Cline, who replaced Hutchins, echoed sentiments of confusion among film crew members, many of whom feared repercussions for associating with 'Rust'.

Before the screening, Rachel Mason, a close friend of Hutchins and documentarian of the film's making, articulated the emotional complexity surrounding the project. “Some crew members told me not to film them on set, fearing they might lose future jobs,” she revealed. Despite the mixed feelings, crew members ultimately returned to finish the film, acknowledging it as a way to honor Hutchins' talent.

Feedback from attendees varied, with some viewers appreciating the film's classic western style, while others found it difficult to separate the narrative from the tragic incident involving Baldwin. “It was hard not to be reminded of it, especially during gunfight scenes,” noted a local viewer.

In response to criticism, Rust Movie Productions defended the festival’s choice, stating that the purpose was to celebrate cinematography rather than financial gain. “The suggestion that those involved in completing Halyna Hutchins’ film were motivated by profit is disrespectful to those who worked tirelessly to honor her legacy,” remarked Melina Spadone, a representative for the production.
