Brazil's President Lula is recovering well after a successful surgery for a brain bleed.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, aged 79, has been discharged from the hospital following a successful emergency surgery to address a brain bleed. The procedure, known as a craniotomy, involved the surgical removal of a bone fragment from his skull to alleviate pressure caused by the bleeding. Lula appeared publicly alongside his medical team at a news conference in São Paulo's Sírio-Libanês hospital, expressing gratitude for both his recovery and the support he received during his hospital stay.
"This here is not an interview, this is simply a session to say thanks," Lula stated, acknowledging his divine protection and the well wishes he received. He was admitted to the hospital after experiencing a severe headache on Monday, which turned out to be the result of an intracranial hemorrhage linked to a fall he suffered in mid-October. Doctors explained that complications from head injuries like his can manifest weeks after the initial trauma.
The president recounted that he fell while cutting his toenails and struck the back of his head, requiring five stitches. He reassured the public that he suffered no brain injury and was conscious and lucid following the surgery. Doctors anticipated that, contingent on his recovery, Lula could return to Brasilia by the following week.
Amid his hospitalization, Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin took over some of Lula's responsibilities, ensuring continuity of governance. Lula's previous health issues have not impacted his commitment to his presidential duties. Since his narrow election victory over Jair Bolsonaro in January 2023, Lula has often humorously insisted that he possesses the vitality of a much younger man.
Lula's resilience in the face of health challenges reflects not only his determination to continue leading Brazil but also the support he garners from his constituents during trying times.
