Emergency services respond to tram crash with ongoing investigations and multiple injuries reported.
Dozens were injured in a tram collision at Strasbourg's central station on Saturday, as authorities reported at least 30 injuries due to the incident. Social media showcased distressing videos and images capturing the scene, where smoke was seen billowing and alarms rang out amidst the chaos.
The collision appears to have occurred when one tram switched tracks, colliding with another tram that was stationary, although some eyewitnesses claimed that one tram was reversing at high speed just before the impact. Local media reported that a detailed investigation into the precise cause of the disaster has been initiated, with no fatalities confirmed as of yet.
Mayor Jeanne Barseghian commented on the situation, confirming the tram collision but emphasizing that the cause remains unclear. She encouraged citizens to await further information as the investigation unfolds. One witnessed the harrowing event, Johan, described hearing a loud impact, saying, "We heard a big impact, a big bang," while another reported that the doors of one tram flew off upon collision.
In the aftermath of the accident, a significant safety perimeter was established in front of the busy station to assist emergency personnel. The Bas-Rhin region's Fire and Rescue Service advised the public to steer clear of the area to facilitate operations by emergency teams. Director Rene Cellier stated that the majority of the reported non-fatal injuries consisted of trauma, scalp wounds, clavicle fractures, and knee sprains, with about 100 individuals being examined by physicians despite having no apparent injuries.
In total, approximately 50 emergency vehicles and 130 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, and Cellier mentioned that the situation "could have been much more serious". He also reported that while both tram drivers were shaken, they sustained no physical injuries at the scene. Authorities will continue their investigation to prevent future incidents and ensure public safety within the transportation system.
