Zelensky Calls for Stronger US Support Amid Tensions with Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasizes the need for firm US backing following a contentious meeting with President Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his desire for the United States to adopt a heightened level of support for Ukraine after a heated exchange with President Donald Trump during a recent meeting at the White House. Following his arrival in the UK for a European leaders' summit, Zelensky called upon the US to maintain its commitment to Ukraine despite the tensions highlighted in the Oval Office discussion.
In the meeting, characterized by interruptions, Trump urged Zelensky to reach a deal with Russia and indicated that continued US support hinged on Ukraine's willingness to negotiate. Accusations were made by US Vice-President JD Vance, who suggested that Zelensky was ungrateful. This encounter was not the intended focus as it was designed to precede an agreement granting the US access to Ukraine's rare earth mineral deposits, a deal that Zelensky was ultimately told the White House would not sign.
As Zelensky landed in the UK, he took to social media to reiterate the importance of US security guarantees in any peace negotiations to resolve the ongoing war initiated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. He acknowledged the US’s desire for peace while emphasizing Ukraine's need for stronger security assurances, declaring, “A ceasefire without security guarantees is dangerous for Ukraine."
While drawing support from European leaders, NATO Secretary General has urged Zelensky to mend relations with the Trump administration, suggesting that stronger ties could aid Ukraine. In Russia, the Kremlin dismissed Zelensky's visit to Washington, characterizing it as a diplomatic failure.
Leading up to the European summit, Zelensky received support from various European political figures, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, who reaffirmed solidarity with Ukraine amidst a deteriorating security situation in the region.
As the conflict continues, there are reports of casualties in Ukraine due to a Russian drone strike just after Zelensky's exit from the US, further underscoring the urgency of securing international backing for Ukraine's defense amid ongoing hostilities.
