Italy's Controversial Asylum Seekers Program Resumes with Albania Transfer

Amid judicial challenges, Italy revives its contentious migrant transfer initiative to Albania, continuing its focus on external asylum assessments.

Italy’s Interior Ministry announced on January 26, 2025, that it has restarted its program of shipping asylum seekers to Albania, which had been temporarily halted following judicial intervention. An Italian Navy vessel successfully transported 49 intercepted migrants to designated centers in Albania, reinforcing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s strategy of addressing illegal immigration through external processing.

Meloni views the initiative as a pivotal aspect of her administration’s policy, labeling it as a proactive approach to curb risky Mediterranean crossings. This revival comes after the Italian judiciary raised concerns over the safety of sending migrants from certain countries, leading to a new evaluation of which nations are regarded as safe for transfer. Despite facing significant backlash from human rights organizations and opposition parties in Italy, some European politicians have endorsed the program as a model for immigration policy amid rising anti-immigrant sentiments.

The initial legal ruling that stalled the first transfers has sparked an ongoing dispute between the Meloni government and the judiciary, as Italian judges seek clarification from the European Court of Justice regarding the designation of safe countries. As the judicial review progresses, Meloni has asserted her commitment to the initiative, indicating that she will dedicate her efforts to ensure its success, demonstrating a firm resolve to navigate through the political and legal challenges ahead.

This renewed focus on a controversial immigration strategy illustrates the complexities and divisive opinions surrounding asylum policies in Europe today.
