New Orleans Jail Break Raises Alarms: Possible Inside Assistance?
Ten inmates, including several facing severe charges, escape from a New Orleans jail under suspicious circumstances.
In a significant security breach, ten prisoners have managed to escape from the Orleans Parish Jail in New Orleans, prompting investigations into the possible involvement of prison staff. The escape, occurring around midnight, was discovered during a headcount at approximately 08:30 local time (13:30 GMT), with one inmate already apprehended.
Sheriff Susan Hutson remarked on the predicament, stating, "There's no way for anyone to get out of this facility without help." The inmates reportedly took drastic measures by removing a sliding cell door and subsequently tearing apart a toilet to create an exit. The sheriff's office provided visual evidence of their escape path, including taunting messages left on the wall reading "To Easy LoL," seemingly mocking the authorities.
As the manhunt continues, nine escapees are classified as "armed and dangerous," raising serious concerns among law enforcement. One of the escapees, identified as Kendall Myles, was recaptured in the French Quarter after surveillance footage alerted police, leading to his discovery hiding beneath a parked car. He is now facing an additional charge for his escape.
Interestingly, the number of escapees was initially reported as eleven but later corrected to ten. Sheriff Hutson explained that the inmates utilized a methodical approach, damaging metal bars and breaking through pipes to elude capture. The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office released images showcasing the hole created by the escapees and noted the clean cuts around the metal, suggesting premeditation.
Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick characterized the escape as an "urgent and serious situation," urging the local community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities tied to the escapees. Several of the escapees have serious charges, including murder, and efforts to locate them are being supported by the FBI and U.S. Marshals.
Hutson further warned anyone who may have aided the escapees could face charges, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the importance of a thorough investigation into potential inside collusion within the jail. The Orleans Parish Jail is situated approximately 3 km (2 miles) from the bustling French Quarter, making the pursuit for the remaining fugitives a priority for law enforcement.
