Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, while following up on a domestic-related investigation, authorities have reported.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris stated that the gunman was fatally shot by the police. The incident occurred just after 14:00 local time (18:00 GMT), with images from the scene depicting an officer being airlifted to a hospital.
The nearby Spring Grove school district briefly sheltered in place but later confirmed that the school was not directly affected by the incident.
Officials emphasized there was no active threat to the public. The shooting took place in a rural area of York County in North Codorus Township, about 100 miles (160km) east of Philadelphia. Authorities mentioned that officers had responded to the scene for an investigation that started the previous day.
As the investigation continues, police have withheld several details. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro visited the area on Wednesday afternoon, meeting with the families of the fallen officers, and expressed grief over the loss of life.
We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country, Shapiro stated, calling for societal improvements to address such violence. He ordered all state flags to be flown at half-mast in their honor.
FBI Director Kash Patel also expressed his condolences, stating that agents are present to assist local and state partners. Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community, he added.
