Celebration erupts as Jen Pawol makes history as Major League Baseball's first female umpire during a regular season game.
Jen Pawol, at the age of 48, has made her mark in US sports by becoming the first female umpire to officiate a Major League Baseball (MLB) game during the regular season. She took to the field as first base umpire during a Saturday matchup between the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves. In her own words, "I'm aware of the gravity. I'm aware of the magnitude," she emphasized to MLB.com.
As Pawol stepped onto the pitch in Atlanta, Georgia, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement, resulting in a standing ovation from the crowd. Reflecting on her experience, she remarked, "It was pretty amazing when we took the field... quite a few people started clapping and saying my name, so that was pretty intense and very emotional."
Support from the stands was plentiful, with fans displaying signs such as "Pawol making HERstory" and "the time has come for one & all to play ball." Following her historic debut, Pawol decided to donate the hat she wore during the game to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum as a token of the significance of the moment.
Pawol, a native of New Jersey, has a wealth of experience, having officiated over 1,200 games throughout her more than 30-year career in minor leagues. She is scheduled to take the field again on Saturday night as the third base umpire, and all eyes will be on her as she stands behind home plate calling balls and strikes in the concluding match of the three-game series.
This groundbreaking achievement arrives 28 years after the NBA ushered in its first female basketball referee, highlighting the slow but steady momentum towards inclusivity in professional sports. The NFL introduced its first female official a decade ago, while a female referee officiated in the men's soccer World Cup three years ago. However, as of now, the National Hockey League remains without a female referee. Pawol's successful debut serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations.
