Investigation Uncovers Lead Poisoning Cover-Up Among Chinese Officials

An investigation into lead poisoning incidents in a western Chinese kindergarten has uncovered official misconduct, including data manipulation by health authorities. The case raises serious concerns regarding public safety and government accountability in China.

Provincial health officials in Gansu, China, are facing scrutiny following a shocking report detailing the manipulation of blood tests in connection to a lead poisoning scandal that affected over 250 kindergarten students. The investigation, conducted by a special team organized under the Gansu provincial Communist Party committee, confirms earlier suspicions about a high-level cover-up surrounding the food safety practices at the unlicensed school in Tianshui.

The findings revealed that the lead poisoning originated from substandard food preparation at the kindergarten, which utilized powdered pigments labeled as inedible food coloring and actually contained lead levels surpassing national safety standards by 2,000 times. Reports indicate that, in addition to actual food safety violations, health officials altered test results, including falsifying lower lead levels for at least two children. Notably, one child had elevated lead levels consistently over a six-month period, while hospital staff failed to issue any alerts.
