**On Ukraine's independence day, President Zelensky emphasizes the nation's resilience and need for peace, while global allies pledge military aid amid rising tensions with Russia.**

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a powerful address on the nation's independence day, reaffirming Ukraine's commitment to fight for its sovereignty and freedom until "calls for peace are heard." In his statement, he asserted, “We need a just peace, a peace where our future will be decided only by us," highlighting Ukraine's transformation from a victim to a determined fighter. He stressed that while Ukraine has not achieved victory, it has not been defeated.

Zelensky's remarks coincided with Russia's claims of Ukrainian attacks on its power and energy facilities, which included an incident at a nuclear power plant in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian Centre for Countering Disinformation suggested that the fires were caused by drone intercepts, accusing Russia of spreading misinformation and using propaganda tactics. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished without injuries, and radiation levels remained stable.

In parallel, both Russia and Ukraine confirmed a prisoner swap with 146 soldiers exchanged on each side, alongside the return of civilians and a journalist captured early in the conflict. Zelensky expressed relief over the released individuals, emphasizing their significance in Ukraine's ongoing strife. The independence day festivities in Kyiv were attended by high-profile guests, including Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney, who reiterated his country's unwavering support for Ukraine, announcing upcoming military aid comprised of drones, ammunition, and armored vehicles.

As part of the celebrations, Zelensky also showcased support messages from international leaders, including King Charles of the UK, who praised the resilience and spirit of the Ukrainian people. The UK's decision to display Ukrainian flags at Downing Street, coupled with an extension of military training for Ukrainian troops, symbolizes the ongoing alliance.

Amidst the backdrop of escalating conflict, recent developments indicated that Russian forces secured two villages in the Donetsk region, capturing around 20% of Ukrainian territory. The dynamics of the conflict remained tense as discussions continued amongst global leaders, including efforts in US-Russia diplomacy led by President Donald Trump.

Zelensky, however, remains steadfast in his insistence on a ceasefire. He claimed that Russia is obstructing meaningful negotiations for peace and accused its leaders of prolonging the conflict. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow is open to talks, but only when an agenda for a summit is firmly established. As both sides brace for potential escalations, the road to peace appears fraught with challenges despite ongoing international support for Ukraine.
