Minnesota Shooting Suspect Identified as ‘Prepper’ with Political Motive
Vance Luther Boelter, accused of shooting Minnesota lawmakers, is revealed to be a doomsday preparer with a list of political targets and connections to a conspiracy theory.
Vance Luther Boelter, the man accused of fatally shooting Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband last Saturday, has been identified by the FBI as a doomsday "prepper.” His wife disclosed that the family was involved in a niche community of Americans preparing for extreme disasters, according to court documents.
Boelter, aged 57, stands charged with the brutal killings and has inflicted serious injuries on Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. Police investigations suggest he may have had plans to target additional individuals, leading to widespread concerns about the potential for further violence.
The apprehension of Boelter came after an expansive two-day manhunt, concluding in a wooded area where he was captured. Earlier, his wife, Jenny Boelter, drew police attention during a traffic stop as she was attempting to move their four children to safety. In her statement to investigators, she relayed a chilling message from her husband urging her to leave, indicating they should prepare for “war” and that individuals armed with guns might soon invade their home.
Authorities discovered a significant cache of cash, passports, and firearms in Jenny’s vehicle, though she faces no charges. She described her husband as possessing a “bailout plan” for emergencies, highlighting the paranoid mindset that often accompanies prepper communities.
Further complicating matters, Boelter reportedly penned a disjointed letter to the FBI asserting that Minnesota's Governor Tim Walz had orchestrated a plot to eliminate U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar as part of a larger political scheme. Despite these claims, investigations have yet to unearth any credible evidence supporting such a conspiracy.
Boelter's political ambitions are additionally underscored by a list of approximately 70 targets, which included prominent Minnesota Democrats, found in his possession. Authorities reported that Boelter had disguised himself as a police officer while executing the attack, donning tactical vests and badges to deceive his victims.
Surviving the assault, Yvette Hoffman has since been discharged from the hospital, while her husband, John, continues to receive medical care after sustaining critical injuries while defending their daughter Hope, who heroically called 911 during the chaos.
