Alejandro Toledo, who served as Peru's president from 2001 to 2006, has been sentenced for corruption linked to bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
A court in Peru has handed down a sentence of 20 years and six months to ex-President Alejandro Toledo for his involvement in corruption and money-laundering activities. Toledo, who served as the country's president from 2001 to 2006, was found guilty of receiving $35 million in illicit payments from the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, which had secured a lucrative contract for road construction in southern Peru.
The ruling was delivered by Judge Inés Rojas, who emphasized that Toledo had violated the trust placed in him by the Peruvian people to manage public finances responsibly. She condemned his actions as a betrayal of the public’s faith, highlighting his duty to protect state resources rather than defraud them. Despite the serious allegations, the 78-year-old Toledo has consistently denied any wrongdoing. During the court proceedings, he exhibited a dismissive demeanor, reportedly smirking and laughing at various points, including when the judge was speaking.
This case is a significant part of the broader Odebrecht scandal, which has reverberated throughout South America, resulting in investigations and legal battles for numerous politicians. The company has admitted to paying millions of dollars in bribes to secure government contracts, leading to widespread corruption inquiries across Latin America and the United States.
Toledo's case adds to the list of former Peruvian leaders facing legal challenges related to Odebrecht. In 2019, former President Alan García took his own life as police approached his home to arrest him on similar bribery charges. Meanwhile, other former presidents, including Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Ollanta Humala, remain under investigation as the fallout from this scandal continues to unfold.
