Bulgarian President Rumen Radev's Progressive Bulgaria party looks set to win Sunday's parliamentary election, marking the eighth general election in five years. Exit polls indicate Radev's party is predicted to garner around 37% of the vote, significantly outpacing former prime minister Boiko Borisov's GERB party, which is projected to obtain just 16%.
Other parties are also expected to enter Parliament, with three or four likely to surpass the 4% threshold. This election came about after the previous government attempted to push through a contentious budget last December, sparking mass protests that Radev supported as president.
In his victory speech, Radev thanked voters for rejecting 'the self-satisfaction and arrogance of old parties,' and reiterated his commitment to building 'a strong Bulgaria in a strong Europe.' He emphasized that Europe needs critical thinking and pragmatic actions to enhance its security architecture and boost competitiveness.
At 62, Radev is viewed as a pragmatic and somewhat pro-Russian leader, often criticizing EU sanctions and advocating for constructive dialogue with Moscow while opposing military support for Ukraine. His campaign focused heavily on domestic issues, particularly promises to fight corruption and restore stable governance following years of political instability.
Having stepped down from the presidency earlier this year to form his party, Radev, a former fighter pilot, now seeks coalition partners to improve governance in Bulgaria. His victory, while impressive, does not provide a definitive mandate for ruling alone.
Bulgaria plays a critical role in supplying ammunition and explosives to Ukraine via third countries, particularly Romania, and Radev’s stances on military support have drawn comparisons to other regional leaders like Hungary's Viktor Orban.
Despite opposing military assistance to Ukraine, Radev has worked towards strengthening Bulgaria's defense sector, including a recent partnership with the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall to enhance military production capacity.
