Vietnamese Beauty Queen Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien Arrested for Promoting Counterfeit Fibre Supplements
Former beauty pageant winner Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien faces arrest for allegedly deceiving customers in a supplement fraud scheme involving counterfeit gummies.
Vietnamese authorities have taken action against a well-known beauty queen and influencer, Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, for alleged consumer fraud linked to counterfeit fibre supplement gummies. Tien, who gained fame as the winner of the Miss Grand International pageant in 2021, is accused of misleading customers about the contents of a product she actively marketed on her social media platforms.
Tiet's promotion of the Kera Supergreens Gummies drew considerable attention, as the influencer claimed each gummy contained a fibre equivalent to that of a plate of vegetables. However, lab tests conducted by concerned consumers revealed that each gummy contained only 16mg of fibre, significantly lower than the 200mg she had claimed.
Investigators found that the gummies were produced using sub-par ingredients and that the product packaging misleadingly failed to disclose the actual fibre content or indicate the presence of sorbitol, a component found in laxatives. This revelation incited a public backlash, leading the authorities to launch a thorough investigation.
Earlier this year, Tien along with fellow influencers Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc were fined and publicly apologized for their roles in marketing the discredited product. Subsequently, Pham and Hang Du Muc were arrested alongside officials from their company and the gummies' manufacturer for producing counterfeit goods.
On Monday, the authorities escalated their actions, arresting Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien for her involvement in deceiving consumers. Reports indicated that over 100,000 boxes of the gummies were sold before distribution was stopped amid the scandal. Tien, who became a prominent figure in Vietnamese media following her beauty pageant success, had previously received accolades from the government and was known for her presence in various reality TV shows.
