Historically, large icebergs have posed significant threats to the region. Laura Taylor, a PhD researcher with the British Antarctic Survey, noted that during a recent expedition near A23a, samples collected may help scientists understand the iceberg's effects on the southern ocean's carbon cycle, ultimately aiding in climate change research.
