As Hungary's election date approaches, Peter Magyar, the opposition leader of the Tisza party, has accused his political rivals of attempting to blackmail him with a secretly recorded sex tape. He claims that this plot aims to undermine his candidacy against long-time Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Magyar leads Orban in recent polling, and with the elections scheduled for April 12, he alleged that a tape from August 2024, featuring a consensual encounter with an ex-girlfriend, is being used as political leverage against him. The claims surfaced following the posting of a photo online showing a bedroom in an apartment relevant to the alleged incident.

Orban's Fidesz party members have publicly distanced themselves from the allegations, claiming ignorance of any such plot. In statements, Magyar expressed concerns about illegal surveillance and insisted that one of the tapes might have been manipulated with secret service equipment. He previously accused his ex-girlfriend of extortion, which she has denied.

In response to Magyar's allegations, Fidesz communications director Tamas Menczer accused him of dishonesty. While Magyar's assertions have heightened concerns regarding the political atmosphere as tensions grow in the lead-up to the election, Orban's administration continues its focus on anti-European Union rhetoric, asserting that external forces are attempting to destabilize his government.

Magyar, over the past two years, has gained traction within Hungary by promoting a refresh in relationships with European partners after a historically strained relationship under Orban's leadership.
