Bangkok Declared Disaster Zone as Heavy Rains Flood City
For days, almost continuous rainfall has poured over the Thai capital, delivering roughly 300 mm (12 inches) of water that has overwhelmed drainage systems and turned major roads into rivers.
On Tuesday, Governor Chadchart Sittipunt officially declared Bangkok a disaster‑affected zone, insisting that emergency teams and international aid ready themselves for the worsening situation.
Video footage shows cars and trucks stuck in waist‑deep water, ground‑shaking channel bursts, and pedestrians scrambling to higher ground. Authorities warn that flash‑flooding can appear suddenly in underground channels and that more rain is expected in the coming days.
Local and national rescue teams are clearing blockages, setting up temporary shelters, and providing instructions for residents to stay out of high‑risk areas. Citizens are urged to monitor weather updates and heed evacuation orders if issued.
