Bukavu school blaze leaves dozens missing

At least 24 schoolchildren are feared dead after a fire swept through two schools in the Kadutu commune of Bukavu, a town seized by M23 rebels last February. The blaze, which also claimed adults, forced many survivors to be rushed to nearby hospitals. Video footage shows children lying on hospital beds, some in pain, while the burned-out buildings still emit smoke.

Rebel‑appointed officials say the fire is still being assessed and will release a provisional death toll later that evening, while the Kinshasa government’s statement on X was more measured in tone, offering condolences without citing numbers. The Minister of National Education, in a brief post, expressed “deep sorrow” and called for continued learning despite the tragedy.

The incident highlights a growing concern over safety standards in conflict‑affected areas: Bukavu’s hillside setting and high population density made evacuation hard, and the fire’s cause remains unknown. In northern Kinshasa, a similar fire at a wedding hall the previous weekend caused a stampede that doomed dozens, prompting the government to strengthen safety measures across the country.

With 300 houses also damaged, the broader fallout threatens the everyday lives of residents, many of whom depend on schools for stability in a region where the political divide is stark. Local communities expressed frustration at both rebel and national authorities, hoping for transparent reporting and immediate resources for rebuilding.
