A federal judge in New York has ruled the US Department of Justice can publicly release grand jury records from Jeffrey Epstein's 2019 sex trafficking case.
US District Judge Richard Berman's ruling reverses his previous decision to keep the material sealed. He cited a new law passed by Congress requiring the justice department to release files about Epstein.
In his latest ruling, Judge Berman said the victims have the right to have their identity and privacy protected, adding that their safety and privacy are paramount.
Epstein was charged with sex trafficking in July 2019. He died in a New York prison cell a month later while awaiting trial.
Previously, Judge Berman had denied the justice department's request to release the records due to concerns about potential threats to victims' safety and privacy.
However, in this ruling, he stated that the materials could now be disclosed because of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed into law by US President Donald Trump last month.
This law mandates the release of investigative material related to Epstein by December 19, including unclassified records and communications, but permits withholding files that could jeopardize ongoing investigations or raise privacy issues.
Judge Berman's ruling is part of a series of recent judicial decisions promoting transparency in the Epstein case; another judge ruled similarly in the case of Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 for her involvement in Epstein's crimes.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has faced ongoing pressure regarding the release of Epstein-related documents. Although Trump had previously downplayed calls to make the files public, he later signed legislation mandating transparency, marking a shift in his stance on this sensitive issue.
Victims like Virginia Giuffre's family have publicly commended this legislative action as a significant step towards accountability.
The forthcoming disclosures are expected to provide further insight into the high-profile nature of Epstein’s criminal operations and the individuals connected to them.
