Five Sydney Swans Players Suspended While Police Probe Alleged Assault
The Australian Football League has stood down all five players from the Sydney Swans for the remainder of the season following an alleged sexual assault incident at the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne. The players—Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon and Riley Bice—had allegedly gone to the hotel after a weekend match, stayed late and invited women to join them, according to club statements.
Swans chairman Andrew Pridham issued a public apology to fans, players and the wider community, saying the sanctions were a response to the club’s own standards of conduct. The club clarified that the decisions were made independently of the ongoing police investigation, for which Victoria Police have spoken to several witnesses but have not detained or formally interviewed any of the players.
"We are deeply embarrassed and ashamed of the poor choices of five of our players," said Swans chief executive Matthew Pavlich at a press conference, adding that the welfare of the women involved was a top concern. He did not confirm whether any drug testing would be conducted, noting that any such testing would fall under the police inquiry’s jurisdiction.
ADF chief executive Andrew Dillon described the allegations as "deeply concerning", underscoring the seriousness of the situation for the sport’s reputation. The five players are among the league’s most high-profile talent, with Heeney and Warner being regular national team contributors.
Unlike some sports that enforce a “no‑fault” stand‑down policy for serious charges, the AFL applies a discretionary, case‑by‑case approach. This means players are not automatically suspended if charged, but can face disciplinary action if their behaviour violates club or league standards.
The Swans currently sit second on the AFL ladder and are set to play North Melbourne at the Sydney Cricket Ground later this week before the finals series commences.
