In brief

The October full Moon illuminated skies around the world, earning the name Hunter's Moon for its bright visibility after the Harvest Moon. Traditional names for full moons reflect natural events, and the Hunter's Moon is prized by hunters for its extended light in the evening. Photographers captured the moon in a range of settings—from planes over San Francisco Bay to towers in Istanbul and city skylines in New York. These images showcase the moon's range of hues, from glowing white to burnished orange, as it rises over diverse landscapes. The spread of the month shows how cultural, geographic and atmospheric factors combine to make the Hunter’s Moon a shared global spectacle.

The October full Moon lit up skies around the world this weekend. Full Moons throughout the year have traditionally been given names that reflect what is going on in nature. This particular full moon is known by several names, including the Hunter's Moon, a name rooted in historical traditions in the Northern Hemisphere. The Hunter's Moon is known to sit in the sky for a particularly long time - similar to the preceding Harvest Moon - giving hunters extra light in the skies.
