Muscatine, Iowa – A single firearm shooting in Muscatine on Monday resulted in the deaths of six people, authorities say, including two students from the local school district and a district employee. Superintendent Clint Christopher confirmed that two of the victims were students but did not disclose their names, ages, or school years. A short statement to the community reads, Our hearts are broken for the family members, friends, colleagues, classmates, and all those affected by this unimaginable loss. Employees and students were offered counseling support the following day.
Police identified the suspect as 52‑year‑old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine. McFarland was found dead on a trail in the city; he killed himself after law enforcement officers approached him. Chief Anthony Kies indicated at a brief news conference that additional victim details, such as ages, would be released during a Tuesday evening vigil.
McFarland had a criminal record, authorities said, but no further information was released. The shooting is considered the sixth family‑based mass killing in the United States this year, according to a database maintained by the Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox, who noted that mass killings are defined as incidents where four or more people are killed within 24 hours, excluding the perpetrator.
The city police continue investigations and will release more details at the scheduled vigil. The Muscatine Community School District remains heavily impacted, with an emphasis on expressing love and support through the community after this tragedy.
