Muscatine police indicated the event stemmed from a domestic dispute. The suspect, 52‑year‑old Ryan Willis McFarland, was identified as a family member to the victims.

The shootings took place across several locations in the city. Officers first responded to a house where they found four injured individuals who were pronounced dead on scene. They later found McFarland with a self‑inflicted gunshot wound on a riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge, and he was also pronounced dead.

Investigators also recovered a second death at another residence and a third at a commercial property, finding all victims were likely relatives. Police have released no names or ages for the victims.

Police Chief Anthony Kies described the incident as an "act of evil" and confirmed that the suspect had a prior criminal record. Muscatine, a 23,500‑person community on the Mississippi River, expressed collective mourning.

Mayor Brad Bark posted on Facebook, "Our hearts are heavy tonight after the tragic shootings that claimed innocent lives," adding that investigation remains ongoing.
