ZZ Top’s Legendary Drummer Frank Beard Passes Away at 77
Frank Beard, the last remaining drummer of Houston‑based blues‑rock trio ZZ Top, died on Monday in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas. The band’s official statement confirmed his death and explained that the cause was not disclosed.
Beard’s passing necessitated the cancellation of the group’s scheduled shows in Utah and Colorado this week. “Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas,” Billy Gibbons said in a heartfelt tribute.
The band was formed in 1969 and has released fifteen studio albums and four live recordings, earning hits such as “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “La Grange,” and “Sharp Dressed Man.” Their 1984 album Eliminator sold over ten million copies and was certified diamond by the RIAA.
Since the death of bassist Dusty Hill in 2021, ZZ Top continues to tour with Elwood Francis on bass. The group announced that their current “The Big One!” tour will resume over the weekend with two dates at Austin City Limits, a venue that held special meaning for Beard.
