Nearly 90,000 people told to evacuate ahead of a wildfire that has spread close to the city of Reno, Nevada
Authorities ordered the evacuation of 42,000 residents from an area on the outskirts of Reno, while a further 45,000 were urged to prepare to leave. The wildfire, first reported on Saturday morning, has burned about 10,500 acres and remains 0% contained.
The blaze was caused by a human activity and reportedly began at 11:15 local. It has moved into areas that host more than 13,700 homes, with two shelters set up for displaced residents.
Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and called in the National Guard to assist firefighting and law‑enforcement operations. Together with one Chinook and one Black Hawk helicopter and 72 personnel, the Guard crewed out over the burning area.
Six people were injured in the flare‑up, including three emergency responders battling the fire. All Washoe County schools were closed on Monday, except for one, and major road closures are in place to protect the community.
